One Time Rye Straw Marquetry Workshop

What Is Rye Straw Marquetry?
Rye straw marquetry is a decorative technique that involves using carefully cut and arranged pieces of colored rye straw to create intricate designs and patterns. It was born in Europe, and especially France, during the 17th century when clergymen, sailors and prisoners, used straw to decorate boxes, furniture, murals, etc. Put aside for many years, straw marquetry came back into fashion during the Art Deco period, when the most prestigious decorators such as Jean-Michel Frank and André Groult returned this art to its former glory. It is highly valued for its intricate beauty and ability to transform ordinary objects into extraordinary works of art.
What Will I Do During the Workshop?
Objective of the Workshop
First and foremost, the objective is to have a great time. Additionally, you will gain hands-on experience in the basics of rye straw marquetry:
• Learn how to open and flatten the straw to reveal its natural beauty.
• Design patterns that highlight the unique shine of the straw when it catches the light.
• Cut and glue the straw onto a substrate to create stunning decorations.
This activity offers a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from daily life and immerse yourself in the calming and creative process of working with straw.
What You Go Home With
At the end of the workshop, you will leave with a box beautifully decorated with straw in the colors of your choice. Depending on the number of participants and your pace of work, you may also create one or two bookmarks showcasing your straw marquetry designs.
You’ll not only take home your creations but also gain foundational knowledge of this exquisite craft. Be warned—you might just get addicted to it! 😊

Is This For Me?
